IG Full Form: Inspector General

The full form of IG is Inspector General, which is called Inspector General of Police. IG is an IPS officer who is a senior officer in the Indian Police Service, whose main job is to maintain law and order in his area. There is no direct vacancy to become an IG, but to become an IG, one has to first become an IPS, after that, an IG can be made by promotion.

IG is one of the senior-most officers in his field who has a silver star on his shoulders so that you can recognize that he is an IG officer. The main job of IG is to maintain law and order in his area. IG is the third highest officer in the state.

How to become IG

There is no direct vacancy for IG, but to become IG, first, you have to become an IPS officer bypassing the UPSC or PCS exam of that state. When you have 14 to 20 years of experience as an IPS officer, then you can be made an IG. Keep in mind that IG can be made only for 4 years.

The age of the candidate should be between 21 to 30 years, 5 years relaxation is also given for some different castes, the candidate must have passed graduation in any discipline from any recognized university.

History of IG

The post of IG was first introduced in the Indian Council Act 1861E, at that time the IG was the senior-most officer in the police department. Which was known as the Indian Royal Police
